BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
The Lost Masters I: Alone In Colts Neck (The Complete Nebraska Session)
Solo session at Colts Neck, NJ, Dec 1981 to Jan 1982. This is the alternate Nebraska album.

When Bruce Springsteen handed a cassette of demos he recorded by himself to manager Jon Landau, they were intended to be his next album once the E Street Band had recorded them. As time passed, all parties realised that the recordings were already worthy of release as they captured a side of Springsteen not yet revealed to his fans – his folk roots.
Recorded at Colts Neck, in his bedroom, the “boss” was alone with his acoustic guitar and head leaned forward almost touching the microphone. The songs were open to interpretation. Several like Born In The U.S.A., Downbound Train and Pink Cadillac were later recorded with the E Street Band and if you’ve never heard the “folk” version, you wouldn’t believe it possible.

Springsteen Scales Over Graceland Fence

Today is the anniversary of Bruce Jumping over the Gaceland Fence seeking a an audience with Elvis for a midnight jam! He tried ringing the bell…when no one answered, he did what any NJ born rocker would do. He was found by security guards who escorted him off the property after telling the future Rock hall of famer that the King wasn’t home! Maybe the next time they see each other!

Conan O’Brien Drops Late-Night Turncoat Max Weinberg

Was it something he did? In the wake of Movieline’s report that Max Weinberg met with Jay Leno to become his new bandleader — a potentially traitorous move, considering that Leno shoved his former employer Conan O’Brien out of the Tonight Show — word is now emerging that Weinberg will not make the move to TNT alongside O’Brien. The main question is when did this all go down, and we’ve got the answer.

First, the semi-official confirmation. City Pages just interviewed music legend Al Kooper, and when Kooper mentioned that one of his bands shares members with O’Brien’s house band, he dropped a tidbit about Weinberg’s firing:

CP: So those guys went off [to Los Angeles] with Conan and Max Weinberg?
Kooper: There’s a name you can’t say anymore. He’s not in that band anymore.

CP: Max? What happened there?
Kooper: They let him go. This is a big transition, and they’re all signing new contracts and everything so they replaced him, as far as I know.

CP: Is the band gone as a whole?
Kooper: No, not at all. That’s the only change. But I mean, there was a lotta conflict because of Springsteen. So now he can play with Springsteen whenever he wants.

Indeed! Some might think that Weinberg was dropped when word leaked of his meeting with Leno, but from what Movieline hears, it was common knowledge after O’Brien’s ouster that were he to mount a new show on Fox or another network, Weinberg (who was disliked by most of the staff) would be jettisoned. With the writing on the wall, perhaps Weinberg’s hail-mary pass to Leno becomes a little bit clearer — even if it didn’t pay off. Better luck next time, Max! Perhaps Bruce Springsteen has some rivals you can approach?

Steve Van Zandt: “I told Bruce Springsteen ‘Born To Run’ Sucked”

Bruce Springsteen – The Ultimate Music Guide is on UK newsstands now.
Guitarist speaks about album sessions for classic record!

Bruce Springsteen’s long-time E Street Band collaborator Steve Van Zandt has said how he once told Springsteen he thought his album ‘Born To Run’ “sucked” when he was recording it.

Van Zandt, speaking in Bruce Springsteen – The Ultimate Music Guide, the new publication from NME’s sister magazine Uncut, said he got involved in the 1975 album when Springsteen threw the gauntlet down to him to improve it.

“All I did on ‘Born To Run’ were the horns on ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’”, he explained. “I was just in the studio, hanging around. He said, ‘What do you think?’ and I said, ‘I think it sucks.’ And he said, ‘Well, go fucking fix it, then.’”

He added: “So I went and fixed it. People came to the Bottom Line [venue] basically to laugh at us. And a funny thing happened: we fucking blew their minds.”

The Boss Sees the Light of Day

So, just how popular is Light of Day Niagara becoming?

Enough to get The Boss’s attention.

Co-founder and avid Bruce Spr ingsteen fanatic Dave Rotella heard it from the man himself while attending the annual New Jersey edition of the Light of Day fundraiser in January. Invited backstage by singer Joe Grushecky -one of Springsteen’s best friends – Rotella suddenly found himself face to face with his idol.
Posted By JOHN LAW , REVIEW STAFF WRITER

“Bruce Springsteen heard of us,” says Rotella, still beaming from the encounter. “Bruce said, ‘Ya, I heard about what you guys were doing down there.’ We were pretty happy.”

Springsteen wasn’t just making small talk. Since it originated four years ago, the Niagara Falls branch has become one of the Light of Day Foundation’s biggest money makers in its fight against Parkinson’s Disease. It’s second only to New Jersey, where the benefit shows began 10 years ago with Springsteen’s help.

Last year’s event , comprised of one main concert in November and a series of summer shows, raised $20,000 — double the take from 2008.

This year’s goal is $30,000, with Light of Day mainstay Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan kicking things off April 30 at Club Italia.

From there, the series moves to Yanks Old Niagara Bar & Grill on Centre Street for shows by Philly favourites Marah May 28 and Pittsburgh’s Joe Grushecky June 18.

An additional concert in July has yet to be confirmed.

It’s all leading to the main Nov. 4 concert at the Greg Frewin Theatre. Aiming to “mix things up” this year, Rotella says this year’s show will be headlined by Gary U.S. Bonds, whose 1981 hit This Little Girl was written by Springsteen.

Last year’s concert was attended by music industry veteran Bob Benjamin, whose battle with Parkinson’s inspired the first fundraising show in 1990, in which Springsteen appeared.

Since then, The Boss has played six more Light of Day events, and now that Niagara Falls is on his radar, Rotella says anything’s possible. When he asked during his brief meeting in December, Spr ingsteen replied “you never know.”

Rotella will be sending a formal invitation, though he stresses the show is not about the artists, it’s about the cause.

“This changed from a music event to a Parkinson’s awareness event.”

Since it was formed by Rotella and friend Mike Minerviti, Light of Day Niagara has become one of the city’s biggest musical events. It has also given Rotella the chance to bring some of his favourite bands to town.

Marah was an unknown entity last year, but made plenty of new fans after their show last summer.

And if Springsteen shows up? The capper to a great year, says Rotella.

“My dream was realized in January.”

Tickets for the Light of Day kick-off show are $55 ($100 per couple), including dinner. Visit www.lightofdayniagara.comor phone 905-357-4977.

Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt Rock With the Rascals

If the idea of ’60s rockers the Rascals reuniting this past weekend for just the second time in 40 years wasn’t enough, rock icon Bruce Springsteen made it all the more memorable when he hopped onstage for the band’s encore, a rousing rendition of the group’s timeless nugget ‘Good Lovin’.’ As WMMR reports, it all went down in New York on Saturday night at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Grill in the name of charity, with proceeds from the reunion of Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli going to benefit the Kristen Ann Carr fund.

The cancer charity is named for the daughter of Springsteen’s co-manager Barbara Carr and Boss biographer Dave Marsh who died of sarcoma in 1993 at the age of 22. Recognizing the E Street Band’s guitarist Steven Van Zandt and his wife Maureen, the annual Kristin Ann Carr Fund’s “A Night to Remember” also found Little Steven joining in on the encore, which can be seen here. Van Zandt — who called the Rascals his favorite band when he inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 — has known the various members of the group for 30 years and has tried to reunite them.

“We first met around 1980 to discuss reuniting the band and have tried every five years or so,” Van Zandt told Backstreets. “Maureen suggested we give it one more shot and sure enough it took Kristen’s amazing spirit to finally get it done.”

Cornish also told the Springsteen fan publication, “I speak on behalf of the band when I say all the money offers in the world could not entice the Rascals to reunite, but four phone calls from Stevie and without hesitation we enthusiastically and immediately agreed to both support this wonderful cause and honor Stevie and Maureen.”
